University placement at Skillcrown: Meet Harry Taylor

Here at Skillcrown, we are delighted to offer industry work placements to students who are interested in working in construction by gaining extensive practical experience, knowledge and skills. As well as giving students this opportunity to have an in-depth understanding about the industry, we are also helping to tackle the skills shortage the industry is facing one placement at a time.

Meet Harry Taylor and learn more about his 10-month placement with us at Skillcrown. Studying at the University of Sussex and already completing 4 months in the summer, Harry is on rotation across our current developments, assisting site managers and working in the office.

“This has been a very educational experience for me so far. During my first two months working in the office, I was assisting and shadowing a Quantity Surveyor. I learnt how to interact with various subcontractors, issuing tender documents and analysing responses to source the best subcontractor suitable for the specified job. In addition, I was involved in subcontractor meetings to review progress on site. This gave me a real overview into business deals with suppliers and negotiates contracts”.

Harry is now working on site at Cairo New Road, one of our biggest projects developing over 100 new flats in Croydon. Learning the fundamentals of a site manager, Harry has conducted regular checks of health and safety regulations to keep to UKHSE standards and completed regular toolbox talks. He also overviewed the daily works on site and managed any problems that occurred such as issues with deliveries or sub-contractors.

“I work closely with the project manager and contracts manager to keep up to date on all the work on site and to forecast what is expected to be completed”, said Harry Taylor. “This has given me a real understanding of project management at a very large scale and what is required to keep a project of this size on track. I am enjoying my time here at Skillcrown and have learnt so much already.”

Harry will be returning to the office to shadow Land & Business Development Director, Kevin Clark, who oversees all planning applications, site acquisition and driving new business. “Harry has demonstrated great work ethic and eagerness to learn about construction. Working in the office prior to going on site, he has great interpersonal skills and drive for construction. I wish him all the best with his placement and future”, said Kevin Clark.
